History of the Sui gas
Explore the history of sui gas, natural gas, and what LPG is, also differentiate the LPG and Natural gas. Sui gas was discovered in Pakistan in 1952 Small town in Balochistan was a turning point in energy history. The gas we use at home for domestic purposes is sui gas. It is a natural gas. It’s a major Formation in Pakistan to fulfill fuel energy needs. The commercial supply was initiated in 1955, and the pipeline was ready to be laid for the transportation of gas from Sui to Karachi and other industries 1960 was the time Sui gas became the backbone of Pakistan’s energy system, fueling industries, Houses, and power plants
This discovery played a major role in the establishment of Pakistan. Sui gas serves the largest gas compressor system. The area where the field is located is the Dera Bugti district of Balochistan. There are 100 producing wells for this gas. Are you curious to know the history of SNGPL and SSGC?

Economic Impact of Sui Gas in Pakistan
The transformation of Sui from natural gas changed the economy of Pakistan. Before the initiation of the gas supply coil, firewood, kerosene oil were used for heating and cooking purposes. Inauguration of its reduced price and improvement of the lifestyle, these changes occur. Industries have grown rapidly due to their cheap prices, such as fertilizers, textile factories, and power generation.
Thousands of workers are doing jobs in SNGPL and SSGC, so it’s a source of job creation for industries. Development of pipelines also patronizes the local profession
What is Natural gas
Natural gas is a fossil fuel and a mixture of different gases found underground on Earth. And it exists in gaseous form. The main component of natural gas is methane. Natural gas is clear and odorless, making it hard to detect without enhancers. This gas is used to cook food, heat, and generate electricity.
How Was Sui Gas First Discovered?
The sui gas field was first discovered in 1952 and remains one of the most important sources of natural gas in the country. This Field produces about 8.5 million cubic meters (or 300 million cubic feet) of gas per day under standard conditions. Pakistan’s largest natural gas field, with an estimated 1.6 trillion cubic feet of reserves, as reported in 2017.
What is LPG?
LPG is a liquefied petroleum gas, and it’s a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, primarily propane and butane, and it is used for heating, cooking, and vehicle purposes, and it is stored as liquid under pressure. It is also used in various applications; it is known as auto gas when used by Power Cars and some other vehicles.
Difference between LPG and natural Gas
| Name | LPG | Natural Gas |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Consist of propane and butane | It is stored as a gas in pipelines |
| Storage | Store as a liquid in containers | It is used for cooking and heating in rural areas |
| Usage | Consists of propane and butane | It is used for heating and generating electricity |
| Energy content | It has a higher calorific value than natural gas | It has a lower calorific value than LPG |
| Flame | Hotter flame | Softer flame |
Challenges and Negative Impacts
No doubt Sui gas has many benefits, but it also has some negative impacts.
Unequal distribution
Gas was first discovered in Balochistan, but unfortunately, most complaints were registered from Balochistan regarding gas issues due to unequal distribution. If you are also facing gas leakage or other Sui gas complaint number, or if you are ssgc consumer, contact to SSGC complaint number and register your complaint.
Shortage
Demand for sui gas is increasing every year, and most of the gas is consumed by Sindh and Punjab. Resources are not enough to fulfill the requirements; this is the reason for gas load shedding in the winter peak season in the industrial sector and homes.
import burden
To fulfill the requirements and cover the shortage, importing LNG is a good decision, but it’s expensive and also puts more pressure on Pakistan’s exchange because more dollars are needed for this.
Industrial slowdown
load shedding of gas directly affects industries because of this, they have to cut down and go towards other fuel sources, and alternatives lead to an increase in the price of products same process occurs in manufacturing factories, which raises the cost of production.
Future outlook
- This is the responsibility of the household, and every single gas consumer in Pakistan should consume wisely to save from wastage.
- Our country needs to research and find new gas resources and natural fields in Balochistan, Sindh, and other related areas.
- In the future, if Pakistan doesn’t find new discoveries so we will rely on imports because previous resources are shrinking and which is expensive.
- .
- SNGPL is working on alternative energy, wind, and Solar, which is a good thing to reduce gas pressure, wastage, and loadshedding, and the cost of production in industries.
- If we combined natural gas with renewable sources so it would make Pakistan’s energy system more stable and also reduce pressure on imports.
